Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium, the largest hockey stadium in the country on 05 January 2023,
The stadium was named after eminent tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda. The stadium was built at a cost of Rs 146 crore with a total seating capacity of 21,000. The stadium is spread across 15 acres of land on the campus of Biju Patnaik University of Technology and is the largest hockey stadium in the country.
Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) developed the project. During February 2021, foundation stone for the stadium was laid by the CM.
The state will be hosting the men’s hockey world cup for the second time in a row. Rourkela will host 20 of the 44 matches while the remaining 24 matches will be played at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
Odisha has come a long way in creating world-class sports infrastructure. Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium will be another feather in the cap.
