On 15 September 2023, the Odisha cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, granted approval to a proposal aimed at elevating the status of two prominent educational institutions.
The proposal outlines the transformation of the Silicon Institute of Technology (SIT), located in Bhubaneswar, and the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST), situated in Berhampur, into self-financed private unitary universities that operate independently from affiliations.
The first part of this transformation entails the creation of Silicon University, Bhubaneswar, as per the Silicon University, Odisha Bill, 2023. This bill envisions upgrading the Silicon Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar, into a self-financed private university operating under the name and style of Silicon University, Bhubaneswar.
Similarly, the NIST University, Odisha Bill, 2023 proposes the conversion of the National Institute of Science and Technology, Berhampur, into NIST University, Berhampur, following the same principles of self-financing and non-affiliation.
Upon achieving this upgrade, both institutions will be empowered to disseminate knowledge by offering academic and research facilities in the fields of Engineering, Technology, and Management. They will align their courses and programs with the norms and standards set by various regulatory bodies.
Additionally, these two newly established universities will serve as hubs for fostering collaboration and interaction between the academic and research communities on one side and industry stakeholders on the other. They will actively seek to forge partnerships, including Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), with industry bodies and individual companies. These partnerships are intended to create opportunities for both faculty and students to engage in real-life research projects and secure sponsorships, enriching their educational experiences and contributing to practical advancements.
