The much-delayed Malkangiri airstrip project has made a kick-start with the ground-breaking ceremony on 12 October 2022.
The construction work has commenced with the bhumi pujan for the airstrip project in Malkanigiri. Jeypore-based Taratarini Construction Pvt Ltd is executing the airstrip project. In September 2022, the bidding process was completed and the tender was awarded. The project will be spread over 94.5 hectares of land with an investment of Rs 33.03 crore.
The completion of the runway and other facilities is scheduled for end-2023. The state government is aiming to make the airport functional by January 2024. This is expected to accelerate the commercial activities in the district.
The obstacle limitation survey for the airport has already been completed by the Airports Authority of India. Around 54 families, relocated for the project have been rehabilitated and provided houses under rural housing schemes.
